The horror continues, who decides what's best for them?
Today's paper The Guardian carries a story just tucked away on one of the inside pages about the Tsunami and those who were so unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The short article covers a story about an Islamic leader in Indonesia stating that those who died deserved to die for they were not true to the Islamic religion and had allowed "foreigners" to dictate their lives rather than living the way Allah had intended. Is this what he truly believes, it seems so as he and over 100 of his followers seem intent on trying to reverse his fellows lack of faith and to offer a form of salvation to the living.
It did not surprise me to read such comments. Having spent some time in Asia over the past year and seen first hand the way that various groups are treated or thought of and the lack of concern towards our fellow man. Whilst the west argues over who should rebuild a particular country, a decision based not on what is necessarily best for the country that needs the aid but more on the advantage that the country who is providing the aid can obtain from the recipient country.
Also on the news this morning, Sky News, they covered a story from Galle in Sri Lanka, they had tried to reopen the hospital and the maternity section was now ready, but the rest of the hospital was unlikely to open in the near future because the government of Sri Lanka was so slow in making a decision. This was also the case with the rebuilding, there are pieces of land that have been so severely devastated that there are no buildings left and numerous people were homeless, yet again the government had yet to decide if the land was to be used. It almost seems that these people had been forgotten by their own country. Surely the government needs to help its peoples, and all its peoples not just those who can afford or by of influence to them.
Also we now hear of the human trafficking that seems to have started. Children disappearing after they have been treated, people looking to profit from the devastation of others. Families who have survived, living through the hell of it all and now they are being torn apart by individuals intent on satisfying not only themselves but others with their perverse acts. And we are told that human nature will prevail, that we are all humane and look to help our fellow man, no comment.
So are these views connected? By this I mean can we see a similarity in the comments of the Islamic leader and the West? There seems to be, both are looking to benefit from the devastation of others. We must remember that people have lost their lives, over 100,000 and millions have been displaced. People have given their donations to help give some relief to the countries concerned and yet we here stories of areas receiving little or no help, simply because it seems that it is not politically suitable to do so, the little people suffer again. Lets have more of these comments about people deserving to die and the images of various dignitaries visiting potential recipient countries and lets get on with the real problem, people are dying and will continue to die whilst the world procrastinates. Let the propaganda stop and the aid begin, lets all stop trying to score points off each other with regards to the most deserving, if you have no home, no food, no lively hood, no family, no future, then no matter who or where they are they are deserving.
