PN06 Poetry Now 2006
Poetry Now, Ireland's leading poetry festival, is celebrating its eleventh year with a galaxy of readings in Dún Laoghaire's Pavilion Theatre from March 23 rd -26 th 2006 .
This year, some 20 Irish and international poets will travel to Dún Laoghaire for what promises to be a thrilling festival weekend, with first-time readers in Ireland including Bill Manhire, the first New Zealand poet laureate and four-time winner of the New Zealand Book of the Year Award; and Yusef Komunyakaa, the Pulitzer Prize winning American poet, who has also won the Bronze Star for Duty in Vietnam, and who is renowned for his performances of his work.
The line-up further includes James Fenton; the great Polish poet Adam Zagajewski; Chinese dissident poet Yang Lian; UK poets Robin Robertson and Alice Oswald; and the celebrated Irish poets, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill; Medbh McGuckian, Vona Groarke, Dennis O'Driscoll, Nick Laird and many others.
In addition to the main readings, the announcement of the winners of Ireland's two main poetry awards - the 2006 Irish Times Poetry Now Award for Best Collection of Poems; and the Strong Award for Best First Collection - will take place. There will be a keynote address: 'Stunning Places: Thomas Kinsella's locations', masterclasses for aspiring poets, outreach programmes, and of course, some late nights!
